Eunchan: GIM is more than just a job!
While sitting down on the green sofas in the kitchen of our office in Espoo, it is clear that Eunchan Park is a 'go-to' person. People walking past us had a lot of questions, which delayed our conversation but in an SME where we are a tight-knit team, everyone is helping each other in even the most straightforward tasks. 'Chan', as his colleagues call him, has been working for GIM Robotics for over 3 years now and is still learning and growing today!
"I came to Finland with my family in 2016 and started to look for working opportunities in robotics. My education in South Korea was focused on the subject but the company I had been working for did not utilize my expertise in this. My wife's friend found GIM Robotics and suggested I would apply. Shortly after that I started to work here!"
Eunchan is passionate about robotics in his spare time as well, and even before he joined the GIMster community, he was building robots in the comfort of his own home. Many of the GIMsters use the workshops at work for their own projects and build both tables and scooters together. Some innovative ideas that have come out of the workshops have developed have been implemented in the robots we use today. So not only can we have fun building and coding robots at work, we can innovate new ideas for the good of the company as well!
When asked about Eunchan's superpower he was hesitant at first but jokingly answered "Cooking!". His colleagues didn't have a problem to jump in and point out that Eunchan is a master of documenting, making videos, integration and has mad hardware skills. He loves to see the fruit of his labor and that was a big reason why he went into robotics in the first place.
"Tangible work is the best, I can see the proof that something we have made is working with the code and structure we have made.
GIM Robotics had a values workshop with the whole company during March 2022. During that workshop everyone gave their input to GIM Robotics new values. The value that Eunchan said he values the most is Treasuring competence, because GIM Robotics livelihood is based on the knowledge and skills of the GIMsters. In order for GIM Robotics to be competitive, we need to have something that our competitors might not have, and if they do have something similar, we need to do it better!
Why is GIM more than just a job then? Eunchan said this was an easy question, because the answer is hands down the people, the GIMsters. The people here make the culture. At GIM Robotics you feel safe to grow and develop, you can make mistakes and learn from it. The GIMsters become friends in your free time, they help with personal tasks as well and give you advice on non-work related problems. The other GIMsters create a culture where you feel valued but at the same time they push you to be an even better engineer. The skills and knowledge in GIMsters here make you want to succeed and prove yourself in demanding tasks.
"The variety of tasks keeps the job interesting. You get to develop your skills in other things than just robotics and that is what I love about working here!"
In a smaller company, the tasks are not that restricted, so when Eunchan wants to have a break in the coding or documenting, he can also make some marketing videos or help out in GIM Robotic's Safety and Workspace Special Interest Group (SIG). The flexible working hours and freedom in your tasks is something that Eunchan values a lot and has kept him motivated in his work.
